Dotan Ceniva, Henri və Hyuston qraflıqlarını əhatə edən Dotan Metropoliten Statistik Sahəsinin əsas şəhəridir; Deyl qraflığına uzanan kiçik bir hissəsi isə Enterprays-Ozark Mikropolitan Sahəsinə aiddir. 2010-cu ildə Dotan metropoliten ərazisinin ümumi əhalisi 145,639 nəfər olmuşdur.[6] The city serves as the main transportation and commercial hub for a significant part of southeastern Alabama, southwest Georgia, and nearby portions of the Florida Panhandle. Since approximately one-fourth of the U.S. peanut crop is produced nearby, with much of it being processed in the city, Dothan is sometimes referred to as "The Peanut Capital of the World". Dothan also hosts the annual National Peanut Festival at the dedicated "Peanut Festival Fairgrounds".[7]
İndiki Dotan ərazisində min illərlə yerli xalqların mədəniyyətləri mövcud olmuşdur. Qədim zamanlarda bu ərazini əhatə edən geniş şam meşələri ovculuq və toplayıcılıqla məşğul olan Alabama və Krik hindu qəbilələri tərəfindən zəbt olunmuşdu. Bu qəbilələr yüksək inkişaf etmiş mədəniyyətə malik olmuş, iki yolun kəsişməsində yerləşən bulağın yaxınlığnda ticarət məqsədi ilə görüşlər təşkil edirdilər.
1763-1783-cü illər arasında Dotan ərazisi Britaniya Qərbi Floridasının bir hissəsi olmuşdu.[8] European-American settlers moving through the area during the late 18th and early 19th centuries discovered the Indian spring, naming it "Poplar Head". Most felt that the sandy soil common to this region would be unsuitable for farming, so they moved on. A crude stockade was constructed on the Barber Plantation, where settlers could take refuge whenever they felt threatened. This fort disappeared by the 1840s, after the end of the Indian Wars in Alabama and the removal of most members of the Five Civilized Tribes to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River.
[citation needed] Some Indians stayed in the region, becoming state and US citizens by giving up their tribal membership.
Dotan Alabamanın cənub-şərqində, Hyuston qraflığının şimal-qərbində yerləşir. Şəhərin hüdudları şimalda Henri qraflığına və şimal-qərbdə Deyl qraflığına qədər uzanır. ABŞ Siyahıyaalma Bürosu məlumatına görə şəhərin ümumi ərazisi 89.7 square miles (232.4km2) olub bundan 89.4 square miles (231.5km2) quru və 0.31 square miles (0.8km2) və ya 0.36%-i sudur.[5]
Dothan has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa). This produces hot, humid summers and generally mild winters, with average high temperatures ranging from 92°F (33°C) in the summer to 59°F (15°C) high during winter. Snowfall is an extremely rare event – a two-inch snowfall occurs about once every ten years, which results in a yearly average of 0.2 inches (5.1mm).[9]Tornadoes are a frequent risk during the spring, summer and fall; the city's tornado activity is slightly below the Alabama state average, but 79% above the U.S. average.[10]
The majority of K-12 students in Dothan and Houston County attend Dothan City Schools,[11] or Houston County Schools.[12] Others attend local private schools such as Houston Academy,[13] Providence Christian School,[14] Northside Methodist Academy,[15] Emmanuel Christian School,[16] or Westgate Christian School.[17] Institutes of higher education include Fortis College, Troy University Dothan Campus,[18] Wallace Community College, Bethany Divinity College & Seminary,[19] and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine.[20]
Dotanda iki xəstəxana mövcuddur : Southeast Alabama Medical Center şəhərin yeganə ictimai xəstəxanasıdır və şəhərin cənub-şərqində yerləşir. Dotanın qərbində yerləşən Flowers Hospital isə özəl xəstəxanadır. Southeast Alabama Medical Center 18 may 2010-cu ildə ştatın 400 nəfərlik ilkin yardım həkim çatışmazlığını həll etmək məqsədi ilə Alabamanın ilk Sümük Xəstəlikləri Tibb Kollecinin tikintisini başladığını elan etdi. The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine, ACOM,[22] 29 iyul 2013-cü ildə təsis edilmiş və 2017-ci ildə ilk məzunlarını verəcəkdir. 110,000-square-foot (10,000m2) əraziyə malik müəsisənin 2007-ci ildə 100 milyon $-dan artıq iqtisadi təsirə malik olacağı düşünülür.
Dotan çoxsahəli iqtisadiyyata malikdir. Agriculture is the largest industry, though retail sales and restaurants have experienced a rapid growth in recent years. Although peanut production remains a mainstay of the agricultural sector, cotton is gaining in importance. Tomato production is locally significant as well, especially in the nearby town of Slocomb, which styles itself "the Tomato Capital of the World".[23]
