Baş qərargahı Tayvanın Hsinchu şəhərində yerləşən şirkətin, dünya üzərində 25 ofisi var və 2016-cı ildə dünyada üçüncü ən böyük fabriksiz inteqral sxem dizayneri idi.[3][4] Yaradıldığı 1997-ci ildən etibarən, MediaTek qlobal bazar üçün çipsetlər istehsal edir. [5][6]
İlk zamanlar MediaTek United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) tərkibində ev əyləncə məhsulları üçün çipsetlər dizayn edən bir bölmə idi. 28 May 1997-ci ildə bölmə ayrılaraq şirkət yaradıldı. MediaTek 23 İyul 2001-ci ildə "2454" kodu ilə Tayvan Fond Birjasına (TSEC) çıxarıldı.
Şirkət optik disk qurğuları üçün çipsetlər dizayn etməyə başladı və sonradan genişlənərək DVD oxuducular, rəqəmsal TVlər,mobil telefonlar,planşetlər üçün çiplərə keçdi.
