Linqvistlərin siyahısı — dili elmi şəkildə öyrənən mütəxəssislərdir. Onlar dilin quruluşunu, funksiyasını, mənşəyini, inkişafını və cəmiyyətdəki rolunu araşdırırlar. Linqvistlər dilin müxtəlif səviyyələrini – fonetika (səslər), morfologiya (sözlərin forması), sintaksis (cümlə quruluşu), semantika (məna), pragmatika (kontekstdə məna), sosiolinqvistika (cəmiyyət və dil) kimi sahələri tədqiq edirlər.
Linqvistlər həm nəzəri, həm də tətbiqi sahələrdə işləyə bilərlər. Nəzəri dilçilər dilin fundamental strukturlarını və qanunauyğunluqlarını öyrənir, tətbiqi dilçilər isə dilin tədrisi, tərcümə, nitq texnologiyaları və dil siyasəti kimi sahələrdə fəaliyyət göstərir.
Ferdinand de Saussure – Müasir dilçiliyin banisi hesab olunur. O, strukturalizm və işarə nəzəriyyəsi kimi əsas konsepsiyaları irəli sürüb, dili bir sistem olaraq təhlil etməyin əhəmiyyətini vurğulamışdır.
Noam Xomskiy – Müasir dilçiliyin ən təsirli fiqurlarından biridir. O, generativ qrammatika nəzəriyyəsi ilə dilin insan beynindəki universal prinsiplər əsasında işlədiyini iddia etdi. Onun nəzəriyyələri dilin təkcə səthi deyil, həm də dərin strukturlarını araşdırmağa imkan verir.
Roman Yakobson – Fonetika və fonologiya sahəsində mühüm işlər görmüşdür. Yakobson dilin fonoloji sistemlərinin strukturu və dəyişiklikləri ilə bağlı nəzəriyyələr irəli sürüb.
Edvard Sapir və Benjamin Li Uorf – Bu linqvistlər Sapir-Whorf Hipotezi ilə məşhurdurlar. Onlar dilin insanın düşüncəsinə və dünyagörüşünə təsir etdiyini irəli sürüblər.
Vilyam Labov – Sosiolinqvistika sahəsində öncül tədqiqatçıdır. O, dilin sosial siniflər, cinsiyyət, yaş və etnik mənsubiyyət kimi faktorlarla necə dəyişdiyini və formalaşdığını öyrənmişdir.
Leonard Blumfild – Struktural dilçiliyin əsasını qoymuş dilçilərdən biridir. O, dilin dəqiq və obyektiv tədqiqinə önəm vermiş və dilin təhlilində elmi metodologiyadan istifadəyə diqqət yetirmişdir.
Maykl Hollidey – Sistem-funksional qrammatika nəzəriyyəsinin banisidir. O, dili sosial fəaliyyət və ünsiyyətin əsas aləti kimi görür və dilin funksiyalarını öyrənir.
